The Great Alaska Earthquake occurred on March 27, 1964, 75 miles east of Anchorage with a recorded magnitude of 9.2, the most powerful in U.S. history. It shook for approximately 4.5 minutes.

What has been recorded in the state of Alaska is one of the most severe natural disasters in the history of North America.

A rolling destructive earthquake has reached the upper limits of man's recording instruments. A wall of water, a sea wave that crested in 50 feet in some locations traveled at high speeds across the Pacific.

The quake shook the Earth, shaking it like a toy, in an 800 mile arc from from Sitka westward to Kodiak Islands. Homes are without heat, temperatures in the 20s. The toll in lives and property is still being counted, but the death toll officials fear may reach 600. The President, Lyndon B. Johnson, has declared Alaska a major disaster area."
